Spray Rating Testing

Spray Rating Testing

Overview – AATCC 22

AATCC 22 is a common spray rating test that measures a treated fabric’s resistance to wetting by water.

The spray rating test (AATCC 22) was developed in the 1940’s to test the water repellency on fabric.

When To Use a Spray Rating Test?

The Spraty Rating Test can be used for a variety of fabrics, from apparel to industrial applications. Durable water repellent (DWR) is typically added to fabrics to create water resistance and prevent the fabric from wetting out. Typical end-uses include:

  • Backpacks
  • Horse blankets
  • Camping tents
  • Outdoor wear

Note: This spray rating test measures the water-resistance of fabric, not water penetration of fabric.

How Does The Spray Rating Test Work?

N

Step 1

Test uses 250 mL of 80 degree water.

N

Step 2

The water is sprayed from a shower head at a 45 degree angle.

Step 3

The specimen is visually inspected based on the spray rating chart below.

No sticking or wetting of upper surface

Slight random sticking or wetting of upper surface

Wetting of upper surface at spray points

Partial wetting of whole of upper surface only

Complete wetting of whole of upper surface only

Complete wetting of whole of upper and lower surfaces
